How can we create connection and inclusion in hybrid teams?
To build connection and a sense of belonging in hybrid teams, leaders should clearly communicate expectations regarding team meetings and regular 1:1 check-ins between themselves and team members. It is helpful to have a few minutes of socializing at the beginning or at the end of meetings. This allows team members to have a sense of ‘water cooler’ socializing that is important for fostering a sense of belonging. It can also be very helpful to have all employees attend meetings via Zoom, Teams, etc. whether they are in the office or working remotely. This helps reduce any sense of isolation or disconnection some employees may feel if they are not joining their colleagues for meetings in the office. Just as with traditional in-person meetings, it is important for leaders to ensure all voices in the meeting are heard by inviting individuals to share their opinions and provide input. It is imperative for managers to avoid ‘playing favorites’ and showing that they value the opinions of some people over others. In addition, while it has always been essential to keep everyone abreast of organizational updates and changes, even more frequent updates are needed in hybrid teams to keep everyone connected
